The DOBOT CR5A and DOBOT CR5AS collaborative robots with SafeSkin are among the central models in the DOBOT CR/CRA/CRS series. Both cobots offer a 5 kg payload, 900 mm reach, and ±0.02 mm repeatability, making them ideally suited for automating classic assembly and handling tasks. Whether for pick & place, screwdriving, testing, packaging, or palletizing – the CR5A and CR5AS cover a broad spectrum of processes in production, laboratories, and logistics.
Thanks to their compact design and moderate net weight of around 25 kg, the cobots can be installed on tables, frames, machines, or in mobile cells. Companies can start with a single cobot workstation and later expand the solution with additional robots, linear rails, or palletizing modules without having to change platforms.
CR5A – Standard cobot for assembly, handling, and machine tending
The DOBOT CR5A is the standard version of the 5 kg cobot platform. With its 6-axis design and an operating radius of 900 mm, it easily reaches multiple stations within a cell, such as component feeding, assembly positions, inspection stations, and storage/packaging. Typical fields of application include electronics assembly, the handling of small components in the automotive sector, consumer goods packaging, or machine tending in metalworking.
With an IP54 protection rating and a robust construction, the CR5A is suitable for industrial environments. In combination with suitable grippers – e.g., electric parallel grippers, vacuum grippers, or customized tools – the cobot forms the basis for standardized cobot cells in manufacturing and logistics.
CR5AS with SafeSkin – Pre-collision detection for true HRC
The DOBOT CR5AS expands the functional scope of the CR5A with SafeSkin technology. This consists of a sensor-based silicone skin that fully encloses the robot and enables non-contact pre-collision detection. People and obstacles are registered from a distance of just a few centimeters, and the robot automatically reduces its speed or stops in a controlled manner.
In combination with the collaborative basic functions of the CR series, the CR5AS is ideal for workstations where humans and robots share space regularly – for example, during collaborative assembly on the same workpiece, in flexible picking stations in e-commerce fulfillment, or in laboratories with frequent manual interventions. SafeSkin supports the implementation of HRC (Human-Robot Collaboration) concepts in a compliant and economical manner.
Typical applications: Pick & Place, screwdriving, testing, palletizing
Both the CR5A and the CR5AS are optimized for recurring, monotonous activities that are still performed manually in many companies. Examples include:
- Pick & place of small parts from boxes, trays, or conveyor belts
- Screwdriving and assembly tasks in electronics and precision engineering
- Inspection and test processes with camera or sensor systems
- Loading and unloading of CNC machines, test stands, or packaging systems
- Labeling, packaging, and palletizing of cartons, trays, and containers
Using standardized applications of the CR series (e.g., bin picking, gluing, loading & unloading, assembly, palletizing), many projects can be implemented with minimal engineering effort and later adapted to new products or variants.
Integration into existing IT and automation landscapes
A key advantage of the DOBOT CR5A/CR5AS cobots is their open communication architecture. Via TCP/IP, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, and RS485, the robots can be connected directly to PLCs, IPCs, SCADA, and MES systems. The control box provides numerous digital inputs and outputs as well as analog I/O, allowing grippers, sensors, safety components, and conveyor technology to be connected without special additional hardware.
With DobotStudio Pro, several programming levels are also available – from graphical flow for simple processes and drag-to-teach to script programming and APIs for Python, C/C++, or ROS. This allows both maintenance teams and external integrators to quickly put the CR5A/CR5AS into operation, make adjustments, and implement new applications.
Scalable platform – from single cobot to robot fleet
The CR5A and CR5AS are part of the DOBOT CR series, which covers payloads from 3 to 16 kg. Companies that start with a 5 kg cobot can easily expand to other models later, such as the CR3, CR7, CR10, or CR16, while remaining within the same software and accessory ecosystem.
In conjunction with accessories such as linear rails, palletizing kits, vision kits, and force-torque sensors, complete assembly and logistics cells can be built. Through the CRS series with SafeSkin, additional SafeSkin variants (e.g., CR3AS, CR10AS) can also be integrated, allowing a consistent HRC strategy to be realized across multiple stations.
