Battery disposal: Information on the return of used batteries (BattDG)

  • Legal certainty
  • Free of charge
  • Sure
  • Sustainable

In connection with the sale of batteries or the delivery of devices containing batteries, we are required to inform you about the return and disposal of waste batteries. Batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. End users are legally obligated to return them; in many cases, this return is possible free of charge.

Quick Overview

All in a look

Here you will find a concise overview of the most important BattDG information for smart robots: waste batteries and rechargeable battery packs must not be disposed of in household waste; return is often possible free of charge. We also explain symbols such as Pb/Cd/Hg and provide tips for safe transport. We are happy to help if you have any questions.

Quick overview:

  1. Used batteries/rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of in household waste.
  2. Returns are possible and are generally free of charge in retail.
  3. Lithium battery packs are frequently used in robotics (e.g., as spare/exchangeable batteries).
  4. Observe symbols: crossed-out wheeled bin + Pb/Cd/Hg where applicable.

Why this topic is important for robots

Why this topic is important for robots

Smart robots rely on powerful energy storage systems – often rechargeable battery packs (e.g., lithium technology) and, in some systems, also swappable batteries or charging/swapping infrastructure.

To ensure these energy storage systems can be safely recycled and valuable raw materials recovered, waste batteries must be collected separately and returned correctly.

Which batteries/rechargeable batteries are typically in smart robots stuck

Depending on the model and area of application, these may include...

Device batteries (rechargeable)

e.g., lithium battery packs for cleaning, service, or industrial robots.

Replacement/spare batteries

e.g., batteries with a battery management system (BMS) for stable power supply and protective functions.

Charging infrastructure / battery swapping stations

Enables automatic charging or battery replacement depending on the system.

Important: Please do not open battery packs and only remove batteries if intended by the manufacturer (removable battery). For integrated batteries, disposal must be carried out via appropriate take-back systems.

How to properly dispose of batteries in 5 steps

A brief guide on how to safely prepare robotic batteries (e.g., lithium battery packs) and correctly return them for battery disposal.

  1. 1 Step

    Check battery type & condition

Check battery type and condition; exercise extreme caution in the event of damage (swollen, deformed, leaking).

  2. 2 Step

Switch off device & remove battery only if intended

Switch off the device and only remove the battery if the manufacturer specifies it; return built-in batteries with the device.

  3. 3 Step

Prevent short circuit (important for lithium)

Tape over the contacts/terminals and pack the battery individually and shockproof to prevent a short circuit.

  4. 4 Step

    Select an appropriate return method

Dispose of the battery free of charge at retail collection points or recycling centers; alternatively, use the provided return method.

  5. 5 Step

Drop off or arrange a return

For your safety, please coordinate the return of damaged lithium batteries with us before transporting or shipping them.

Safety instructions specifically for lithium battery packs

Since lithium batteries are frequently used in smart robots, increased safety requirements apply.

The following security requirements

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry, and protected place.
  • Avoid short circuits (e.g., caused by metal parts/loose contacts).
  • Please use original transport packaging or equivalent secure cushioning if possible.
  • Please do not ship damaged or suspicious batteries (e.g., deformed, overheated, leaking) yourself; consult us beforehand.
Note:

These instructions are for safety purposes. Transport requirements may vary depending on the shipping provider and battery type.

Where you can return old batteries/rechargeable batteries

Retail collection points

Retail collection points

Return used batteries and rechargeable batteries free of charge to retailers, usually where they are sold.

Municipal recycling centers

Municipal recycling centers

Recycling centers safely accept old batteries and rechargeable batteries and send them for professional recycling.

Please note before returning:

  • Do not damage, open, or short-circuit the batteries.
  • If possible: insulate contacts/terminals (e.g., tape them over) and pack in a shockproof manner.
  • For large/bulky battery packs (e.g., high-capacity) or damaged batteries: please contact us in advance so that we can coordinate the safest return method.

Meaning of the battery icons

On batteries, you will find the symbol of a crossed-out wheeled bin. It means: Do not dispose of them with household waste. Additional chemical symbols indicate specific ingredients (above defined threshold values):

  • Pb

Battery contains more than 0.004% lead

  • Cd

Battery contains more than 0.002% cadmium

  • Hg

Battery contains more than 0.0005% mercury

FAQ on battery disposal for robots

Where can I return robot batteries?

At retail take-back points, at municipal collection points, or, for batteries from our product range, directly to us upon prior arrangement.

Is the return free of charge?

Used batteries can generally be returned to retailers free of charge; end users are required to return them.

How can I tell that a battery must not be disposed of in household waste?

On the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on the battery/rechargeable battery.

What do Pb, Cd, and Hg stand for?
